I had the thrilling
opportunity and honor to be interviewed about the “Love-Talk-Read” book
drive on KMAX-TV, channel 31’s Good Day Sacramento on January 22nd. It was a wonderful chance to connect with thousands
of viewers by reaching out to them in their homes through their television
sets.
Dr. Celeste Roseberry-McKibbin announces on Good Day Sacramento the beginning of a community wide Love-Talk-Read children's book drive with 19 book donation locations |
I had no idea how much pressure
and hard work it is to broadcast a TV
news story, but reporter/anchor Tina Macuha and photographer Paul Winchell were
such pros that they guided all of us through it with such grace and ease. I couldn’t be more pleased with the result,
and I am deeply appreciative to KMAX-TV, channel 31, and its sister
station, KOVR, channel 13 for supporting us and allowing us to explain
the importance of early childhood literacy. To see the story, please click on: Dr. Celeste Roseberry-McKibbin's TV interview
I’d like to send my
sincerest thanks to Todd Lindeman, the principal of Thomas Edison Elementary
School and the staff for allowing us to use their reading center as the
location for the story and for being so helpful.
I was so impressed with how
polite, well-behaved, and enthusiastic the students were. It is always such a joy to see children’s
faces light up when they learn they get to select a book, take it home, and
claim it as their own!
Deanna Berg, the regional
executive director of Reading Partners, also joined us for the live interview
as a collaborator with our book drive. I
have donated hundreds of books to Reading Partners, a non-profit, literacy
tutoring program that offers reading help to students in 11 Sacramento area
public schools, including Thomas Edison Elementary School in the San Juan
Unified School District. Students who
have participated in their program show an average of one year of reading
improvement for every 6 months of tutoring.
That is astounding progress! I am so pleased that they are part of our
children’s book collection effort.

Viewers are already
responding generously to the Good Day Sacramento story. Immediately after it aired, we received a
donation of 200 books, and two Boy Scout and Cub Scout troops have pledged to
collect books for the LTR book drive. I can’t thank them enough for their
involvement and support!

I hope that you will
seriously consider joining the “Love-Talk-Read” children’s book drive
to put books into the hands and homes of the thousands of children in our area
who have no access to books. I know
there are so many gently-used books sitting on bookshelves that could be
donated to this important cause. It is a
great opportunity to clean out your closets and it takes very little time or
effort. If you are interested in making
a donation or if you belong to a community group, church, or sports team that
would like hold a book drive, please contact us at the following e-mail
address sacbookdrive@gmail.com
We are so excited and
thankful to be collaborating with Mayor Kevin Johnson’s Sacramento Reads! Reading Partners, The
Sacramento Food Bank, and the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency,
and the Sacramento State Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology
in this community-wide children’s book drive.
Thanks to their support, we are very pleased to have established 19 book
donation sites throughout the region. Please see the list below for a location
near you, and please consider joining us to help thousands of local children
discover the magic and power of reading. You can change a child’s future!
